Only individual households practice this because cereals cannot be grown so well. The structure for the land distribution is: 3495 hectare, out of which: arable land - 785 ha, pastures - 849 ha, natural hay fields - 849 ha.
Total number of animals on species: 2.700 bovine, 2.100 ovine, 1.500 pigs, 45 horses 6.000 poultries.

Sylviculture Bistra est située dans une zone montagneuse, très boisée, où l’exploitation du bois est une activité importante. Conformément aux lois 18/1991, 1/2000 et 10/2001, 98% des forêts, des propriétés agricoles et des immeubles ont été restitués à la commune.

Until a few years ago, most of the people in the region were employed in the mining industries in Baia de Aries, Rosia Montana, Rosia Poieni, Zlatna. Because the mines were closed in the last years, the population suffers now from a lack of work places.
Besides the traditional trades, commerce, livestock breeding and wood processing are the main industries in the village.

The town hall has recently been approved a 75.000 Euro external financing system for the modernization of the school in the centre of the village. The new school will be opened at the beginning of the new school year. Several other projects for the rehabilitation of the other schools have also been made.

There are only one house of culture and a village library in the village. For occasions like shows, festivities there are many places that can be arranged.

The library was established at the outbreak of World War 1, with the help of the “Despartamântului Abrud – Câmpeni” of the ASTRA Society. It had, in the beginning 36 books.Activity logbook of the library for 2004:

  • A famous choir functioned in the village for over a century. It was started in 1872 by father Petru Simu and was active until the year 1990, especially because of the efforts of the teacher Iuliu Coroiu. Plans to restart the choir and to rebuild the local house of culture are priorities for the mayor.
     
     

    Petru Pavel Aron: Greek-catholic bishop of Blaj, he established, in 1754, in Blaj, the first Romanian seminar and high school in Transylvania and a printing office.

    Alexandru Sterca Sulutiu: the first head of the Romanian Greek-Catholic church (1853 – 1855). In 1861 he asked for the autonomy of Transylvania and rights for the people living in the province. President of the “ Astra” Society, he donated his entire fortune to establish a Romanian university.

    Vasile Ladislau Fodor: Lawyer, father of the Revolution in 1848 – 1849. He was the commander of the revolutionaries from Râmetea – Ponor. He fought in the battles of Fântâni, Geomal, Validesti, Piatra Taiata, Piatra Lunga, Râmet, Aiud – Trascau, Geoagiu si Turda. Born on the 8th of March 1824 in Bistra, he died in Halmagoi, on the 10th of April 1865.

    Nicodim Ganea: composer, conductor and man of culture. Learned in Blaj (1900 – 1904), Graduated of the Conservatorium in Bucharest (1908) and Budapest (1910). He was a chorister in the “Carmen” Cultural Society n Bucharest (1905 – 1908) and conductor of the choir of the “Petru Maior” Academical Society in Budapest (1908 – 1910). He composed theater, and choire music. He wrote theater plays (“Neagu de Lin”), poetry (“Din sarmana mea gradina”, Orastie, 1910) and texts for music (oratoriul “Decebal si Sarmisegetuza”) s.a.
    Nicodim Ganea was born and died in Bistra (the 14th of June 1878 – the 24th of October 1949).

    Teodor Caturu, Rostie Florea, Ion Iobagiu, Petre Oaida Tica: captain in the army of the rebels from 1784, led by Horea, Closca and Crisan.

     
     

    The main cults present in the village are Orthodox (97,93 % of the population) and Greek-Catholic (1,4 % of the population).

    There is only one church (orthodox), placed in the centre of the village. It has the size of a cathedral, housing more than 1.000 believers. Locals from the surrounding villages come to this church at the great fests.

    The choir of the church is very good, and more and more children are members in it. Another orthodox church is being built in the small village Garde. The festival of the church is “Nasterea Sfintei Fecioare” (the 15th of august).

    The Greek-catholic believers, which are few, have received a house in which to conduct their services, in exchange for a piece of land on which the new school will be built.

     
     

    The main traditions are related to caroling at the three most important fests during the year.
    On Christmas, they sing: “Irozii”, “Iosif and Maria”, “Steaua”. Acts are played that depict the birth of Christ. The members of the caroling bands depict persons prom the time of the birth of Christ through their costumes: Irod, roman soliers, The virgin Mary, Josef and others.
    On New Year’s Eve they sing: Plugusorul, Sorcova, “Buhaiul” and “Capra” carols through which they wish those visited luck, health and wealth in the New Year.
    The tradition that is unique to this village is caroling in the weeks after Easter, Pragsorul. Bistra is the only village in the area where this 250 year old tradition is kept.

     

    Fonduri cinegetice: over 7.000 h out of the 12.000 h of the village are covered with forests that are populated with different species of animal. These species make good hunting possibilities: brown bear, wolf, fox, wild boar, deer, hare, mountain cook, hawks and others.

    Fonduri piscicole: the village of Bistra has a rich river network, made up of the Aries River (7 km on the territory of the village) and small streams with a constant flow Valea Mare (over 20 km), Valea Bistrisorii (18 km), Valea Dobrii (9 km), Valea Lipaii (8 km), Valea Petresii, Stefanca and teens of other small creeks. trout, sturgeon, chub make up the fish populations in the rivers.
